In Chinese medicine, the gut is at the center of health, playing a crucial role in digestion, immunity, and even allergies. The Spleen and Stomach, associated with the Tai Yin (Lung/Spleen) and Yang Ming (Large Intestine/Stomach) channels, are responsible for transforming food into vital energy (Qi) and transporting it throughout the body. When these systems are weak or out of balance, it can lead to an overactive immune response, making the body more prone to allergic reactions—whether in the skin, digestive tract, or nasal passages.
Many allergies, from seasonal congestion to food sensitivities and skin conditions like eczema, stem from Spleen Qi Deficiency or dysfunction in the Stomach and Large Intestine channels. When the Spleen is weak, it struggles to properly break down and distribute nutrients, leading to dampness, phlegm, and inflammation—all of which contribute to congestion, digestive upset, and skin reactions. The Lung and Large Intestine channels, closely connected in the Tai Yin/Yang Ming relationship, also play a role in clearing toxins and regulating immune function. If the gut is struggling, the Lung channel can be affected, leading to nasal congestion, asthma, and heightened allergic responses.
This is why I focus on gut health when treating allergies. Strengthening digestion with acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and proper nutrition not only improves digestion but also calms the immune system, reducing symptoms like nasal congestion, skin rashes, and food sensitivities. If allergies have been disrupting your life, let’s address them at the root—starting with the gut!
