The insertion of very thin (bendable) needles into the skin may feel like a slight pinch. Most people don’t feel anything at all. Once the needles are inserted, a deep pressure or dull (not painful) ache may be felt. The achy feeling is the needle accessing the fascial layer to induce a physiological response involving the immune and nervous systems for healing to occur.
Commonly, patients new to acupuncture will begin to see lasting changes after the 6th treatment if coming in twice a week. Many report reduced pain or relaxation and calmness after the first treatment. The more treatments you have the more times your body is reminded to heal itself. Once acute conditions are resolved, patients may find that coming in monthly or even seasonally will serve their needs.
Although very rare, the most common side effects of acupuncture include soreness, or bruising at the site of needle insertion. Depending on the treatment offered, your practitioner may offer some “homework” such as increased water intake or rest after a particular treatment. Use of moxibustion in a treatment may cause headaches in sensitive individuals. Your practitioner is trained in safe needling practices, which have been shown to reduce the occurrence of adverse side effects.
